Paul is survived by his wife Camille and his three children, Penelope (10), Alexander (8) and Beatrice (5); his parents, Paul and Maya, and sister Marcela; and many other relatives and friends.
Paul was born in Slovakia and emigrated to Los Angeles when he was 11 years old. He and his family found their permanent home in the U.S. in Portland, OR when he was teen. Paul excelled at football and track in high school and loved throwing the hammer.
After college at Western Oregon University Paul moved to Maryland where he met Camille in 2004. He had a very successful career as a software engineer, which even led them to Zambia for a year while he worked with the CDC to develop a system of electronic health records for the Zambian government. Eventually they moved to Minnesota to raise their children closer to family. Paul was intensely proud of his children, he loved being a dad and loved teaching and watching them learn.
Paul was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor late in 2015. The family is very grateful to the amazing doctors at the Mayo Clinic and feels fortunate to have had three years with him following that initial diagnosis. Paul passed away due to complications from pneumonia on March 2, 2019.
Paul was an intensely loyal friend; if he recognized you as an interesting, challenging, or curious soul, you earned his respect permanently. His passions included squash (the sport), phish (the band), and paprika (the food). He loved cats, original Star Trek episodes, hiking and backpacking, and making Camille laugh. Paul was always up for a new challenge or experience, up until the very end.
