Barbara Thompson Obituary Thompson, Barbara Grandin Age 87 of Wayzata, MN, passed away February 16, 2013. Barbara, the only child of Dorothy and Charles Livingston Grandin, Jr. is survived by her husband of 65 years, William "Bill" Thompson; her son, Charles Grandin Thompson of Salt Lake City; and her daughter, Judy Thompson Fischer of Minnetonka Beach. She was blessed with eight grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Barbara's forebears reach back to a Surety to the Magna Charta and includes prominent members of the Grandin Family who owned "Bonanza Farms" in North Dakota. Ancestors from her mother's side of the family include the Fritsche Family from Tonawanda, NY. Her grandfather, John Fritsche, settled in Minneapolis and became a successful investor, owning one of the first automobiles in the city. Barbara attended Northrop Collegiate School, graduated from The Madeira School of McLean, VA and the University of Minnesota as a French major. Barbara served as Philanthropy Chair of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She and Bill married following Bill's service in WWII and were long-time residents of Greenwood and Wayzata. Of the many organizations to which she devoted her energies, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, where she was a Trustee and Life Member, The Lake Minnetonka Garden Club, serving as Treasurer, the Minnesota and Wayzata Historical Societies, The Junior League of Minneapolis, The Nature Conservancy, and the Republican National Committee were all special to her. She was also a bookkeeper for The Bookcase in Wayzata for many years. The Thompson Family enjoyed golf and tennis at Woodhill Country Club, The Hillsboro Club in Florida, and membership at the Minneapolis Club. A memorial service at Wayzata Community Church, 125 East Wayzata Blvd. will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, March 2, 2013. Memorial donations to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum are suggested in lieu of flowers.
