Bette Hammel Obituary Bette Marie Hammel, author of "Legendary Homes of Lake Minnetonka," "Wild About Architecture: A Lifetime of Luck and Pluck," "Big Island Remembered" and other books passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at age 99. The longtime Wayzata resident had most recently lived at The Glenn in Minnetonka. Bette was born July 3, 1925, in St. Paul, Minn. She was a proud graduate of Humboldt High School in St. Paul and the University of Minnesota School of Journalism (1947). In an era when women were few and far between in communications jobs, Bette was a pioneer, working as a radio writer, TV broadcaster, ad agency copywriter, TV commercial producer, public relations consultant and finally, freelance writer for several national publications specializing in architecture and historical events. Her long and remarkable life included a number of groundbreaking activities. In addition to her work in public relations and journalism, she was active in the DFL Party and served on several architectural and design review boards. Bette was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Hammel, a prominent Minnesota architect. She is survived by daughter Susan Hammel, of Minnetonka; grandchildren Danny of Minneapolis and Caleigh of Portland, Ore.; stepchildren Anne Hammel of New York and Stephen Hammel of Pepin, Wisc, and nephews Tom and Jerry Jones of Phoenix, Ariz and Ken Jones of Forestville, Calif. Visitation will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at St. Bartholomews Catholic Church, 630 E. Wayzata Blvd. in Wayzata, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the Bette Jones Hammel Scholarship at the University of Minnesota, http://z.umn.edu/HammelMemorials, Twin Cities PBS or Interfaith Outreach of Plymouth. A private family burial will take place at Summit Park Cemetery in Wayzata.
