Catherine Shipton Obituary
Shipton, Catherine M. of Maple Grove, Minnesota formerly of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on December 20, 2011. She was an elegant lady who loved life and was adored by countless friends and family. Catherine was born December 26, 1917 to Dr. Edwin and Mildred Cobb. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1936 and enrolled at the University of Iowa where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Her passion for theater began at an early age and lasted through her entire life. She entered Max Reinhardts Workshop in Los Angeles which covered every phase of theater. She went from a rising starlet to a loving farm wife and mother. She married Bill Shipton in June 1943, in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he served as a naval instructor. After the war, they returned to Iowa and settled on the Shipton farm in Green Mountain, Iowa where they farmed and raised two children, William C. and Susan. In 1987, they built a home in Marshalltown and also maintained a home in Naples, Florida. She belonged to the First Congregational Church, was a 70 year member of PEO-Chapter JU, Hawthorn Club, Assistance League, and the Marshalltown Community Theater; where she became a stage veteran appearing in many plays. She loved all sports, bridge, golf, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. For health reasons she and her husband moved to Minnesota to be closer to family. When her husband, Bill died in 2003, she decided to stay in her assisted living apartment near her family. Her favorite pastime was playing with her six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Shipton, her parents and her sister Virginia Cooper. Survivors include her son, William C. Shipton (Jack) from Bloomington, Indiana; daughter, Susan Mickelson (Tom) from Maple Grove, Minnesota; grandchildren, Jeremy Mickelson (Teresa) from Plymouth, Minnesota, Molly Weidinger (Matt) from Maple Grove, Minnesota, Anne Lennartson (Jason) from Maple Grove, Minnesota and Steven Mickelson from St. Paul, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, of which she was most proud are Owen William Mickelson (9), Amara Weidinger (7), Nora Mickelson (7), Lydia Weidinger (4), Finnian Mickelson (3), and Elianna Lennartson (1). Graveside services will be held in the Spring in Marshalltown, Iowa.
