Obituary

Chloe Ackman Obituary Ackman, Chloe Doerr 88, died peacefully on July 26, 2006. She is survived by her 3 children, G. Stuart (Ann) Ackman of Orono, Delia (Hugh) Constant of La Jolla, CA, Lauress Mary Ackman of East Haven, CT, and her 3 grandchildren Alexis Ackman and Benjamin and Chloe Constant. A lifelong resident of Minneapolis and the Lake Minnetonka area, she lived an active and full life. For well over fifty years she worked with passion and commitment as a volunteer for several organizations. In the 1950s she received special recognition for her work with the Community Chest. She was well known for her work with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, where she helped establish the Museum Shop and newsletter as a member and later president (1969-1971) of the Friends of the Institute. Later, she was appointed to serve the Board of the Institute, where she occasionally locked horns with her husband of fifty-four years, Lauress V. Ackman (1920-1999) who also served on the Board. They honored her service in 2003 by naming her honorary chairperson for the annual Art in Bloom exhibit and festivities. She was also active on the Board and was later President of the Volunteer Committees of Art Museum in Canada and the United States. From 1964 onwards, she also served on every committee of the Family and Children's Service (FCS), holding every Executive office before her election as President in 1982. She became a life Member in 1989 at the same time that she was instrumental in the first capital campaign. A lifelong learner, she participated in 50 years of membership in Peripatetics, a group which picked a new topic each year to study in depth. She gave her last paper in 2005 on the early European incursions into Africa. She also was a founding member of the Gopher Brokers, an investment club. In recent years, she started a 9-hole golf group called the Happy Hackers at Woodhill Country Club and also organized a new social group for widows and widowers (WOW) there. She also loved the opera and the symphony and went as often as she could. She was known for her sense of humor and her strong sense of right. She was passionate about the things around her, had a generous spirit, and always had the courage to speak her mind. We all had to keep up with her as she was always a few steps ahead, in fashion as well as intellect. We will miss this smart, thoughtful, caring woman. Services will be held at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 1st, followed by a reception at Woodhill Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Minnesota Opera, or the Family & Children's Service. David Lee Funeral Home Wayzata 952-473-5577
