He graduated from Wayzata High School in 1948 and attended the University of Notre Dame from 1948 to 1951 on a football scholarship. In 1951 Dave transferred to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and graduated from there in 1952. After college, Dave served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and following his service he returned to Minnesota. Dave was employed by Kalman & Company (now RBC Dain Rauscher) for two years and then joined Graco, Inc. as a sales trainee. Dave spent the next 45 years at Graco, serving as its President and CEO from 1962 to 1996 and retiring in 2001 as Chairman of the Board. Dave served on many boards, including the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota Historical Society, Junior Achievement Foundation and Surmodics, Inc. Dave was a community and business leader. He believed businesses had a responsibility to the communities in which they were located and challenged other businesses to help out their communities in what is known today as the "5% Club." Dave was instrumental in the building of the Mill City Museum and very involved in educational programs at Fort Snelling. He established the Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics and was one of the founders of the Center for Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas. Dave loved to hunt, golf, fish and travel, and particularly loved his meetings with his Monday Morning Prayer Group. Dave's love for his family and friends and his ready smile will be greatly missed. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Joseph Koch and Ione Irene (Stubbs) Koch, and sister, Marilyn (Koch) Langdon.
