Donna Hubbard Obituary WAYZATA Donna Day Hubbard, 82, passed away at home in Delano, Minnesota, on October 2, 2024. She was the wife of William Brewster Hubbard III.
Donna was born in Grand Island Nebraska, on September 9, 1942, seven months after her father Robert F Day, left for WWII. She was raised by her mother Marie Bach Day for the duration of the war, under food rationing and near a German POW internment camp. Her earliest memory is of visiting the POW camp, delivering extra food and supplies to the prisoners, because her mother hoped the Germans, were doing the same for our POWs. Her father returned from the war when Donna was 3, and she had a very happy and active childhood in Nebraska. She was raised by parents who were active in their community and who instilled that same ideal in her. Donna left Nebraska in 1960, for San Antonio, Texas, where she attended Trinity University. Originally, planning on a music degree, she realized she hated the alone time in the practice rooms, and ultimately earned a BA in Education. During Donnas time at Trinity, she was selected as 1 of 13 woman, to be the founding member of a new sorority. Gamma Chi Delta is still active 63 years later, and consistently ranks as one of the top Greek organizations, at the University. She also ran into a young man, at one of Trinitys local fraternity parties, where it was love at first sight. Donna and Bruce were married in1963 and celebrated 60 years married (63 together) on December 28, 2023.
After graduation, Donna was an elementary school teacher, in San Antonio and Grand Island, before Bruce was transferred to Wayzata, Minnesota in 1966, where they purchased their first home in 1967. They would go on to raise 2 children in a home they lived in for 45 years, during which Donna was a substitute elementary school teacher at The Blake Schools, St Barts Catholic School, and in the Wayzata public schools. She was an ever present and involved mother who not only drove the kids to athletic practices, she attended every swim meet, soccer game, or horse show, her children were competing. Donna was a fierce advocate regarding her childrens education, when she knew extra help or new schools were needed, at a time when no one knew about ADHD, and there was no clear course of action. Donna was also very active at Wayzata Community Church, serving on boards, singing in the choir, and assisting in musical performances during Mission Festival. She was also active in various organizations promoting the advancement of young women, such as Jobs Daughters. However, Donnas true love was the annual Talent show she was involved in, at Wayzata Country Club, for over two decades. Originally starting off a cast member, acting in comedy skits with Bruce, she would go on sing everything from Broadway solos to country duets, with people she still called friend to the day she passed. Donna would eventually move into the directors chair, and for over 10 shows, work with some of the funniest and most talented people she had the privilege of knowing.
Donna would survive breast cancer in 1992, plus a hip replacement, an ankle replacement, and a knee replacement, during the later years of her life, but none of this slowed her down. She continued to travel to England to visit her "favorite" daughter, Maria Slattary, an exchange student that lived with the family and attended school with Donnas daughter, in 1986. Maria would become a permanent member of the family along with her future husband, and 2 daughters. Donna also traveled all over the country with Bruce, taking side trips to visit Presidential museums, when they were in the same state, and loved attending the different theaters in Minneapolis and St. Paul to see plays, operas and musicals performed year-round in the Twin Cities.
Bruce and Donna would spend the bulk of their lives together in Wayzata, where Donna was an avid entertainer, rarely lacking in a reason to throw a party. Eventually downsizing and moving out to Delano, in 2020. They maintained a constant and lifelong attachment to Wayzata, never going more than a day or two without lunching at their favorite restaurant, where Donna always had a glass of iced tea, no lemon, and enjoyed the beautiful view out onto Lake Minnetonka. Donna was diagnosed with Cancer once again in 2022, and this time she was unable to beat it. She was a fighter to the end, passing away at home surrounded by her 5 dogs, 4 cats, her husband and daughter.
Donna is survived by her husband William Brewster Hubbard III, her daughters, Samantha Hubbard and Dr. Maria Slattary (Dr John Rogers), and her "nieces" Grace and Bridie Rogers. Donna was proceeded in death by her son William Brewster Hubbard IV, and a sister she never got to meet Susan Day. There will be a memorial service for Donna at Wayzata Community Church, on October 21st at 1pm, followed by a gathering in Mithun Hall, and a family interment in the columbarium.
