Dorothy Thompson Obituary
Thompson, Dorothy G. Passed away April 9, 2010. Survived by son, Jon (Marcee); daughters, Janna Thompson and Jane (Tom) Antil; nieces, nephews, grandchildren, friends and two beloved felines. Preceded in death by her sister, Delphine Gerber and brothers, Cyril and Julian Gerber. Dorothy was born in LeSuer on July 24, 1918. She graduated from high school in Buffalo and at age 19 taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Perham with 38 students ranging from age 5 to 16. Later she graduated from St. Cloud Teacher's College and was offered a job at the Minneapolis Police Department where she was promoted to the Detective Division of the Chief's Special Detail. From there, she went on to be the first school social worker in Ironwood, Michigan public schools. It was at the University of Michigan where Dorothy met and married Jon's father, Hayri Yorgancioglu, a citizen of Turkey attending the University. He was called back to the Turkish Army during the Korean War and wasn't heard from again. Dorothy received a Masters Degree in Personnel and Guidance from the University of Michigan. When she returned to Minneapolis, she worked in the Minneapolis Public Schools as a social worker, teacher, assistant principal and counselor. Dorothy moved to Faribault when she married Lawrence Thompson, a widower with two daughters. While there, she became Director of Education and Residential Services at the Minnesota School for the Blind. When her husband Lawrence was killed in an automobile accident, Dorothy moved back to Minneapolis to live with her sister. She became an employee of Opportunity Workshop as the director of Clara Doerr Residence. She became interested in Prader-Willi Syndrome and was instrumental in establishing a group home in South Minneapolis. She was active in the national association and traveled widely as a consultant for the Prader-Willi Association. Dorothy also attended additional college courses at the University of Minnesota, San Francisco State College, the College of St. Thomas, Perkins Institute for the Blind in Waterloo, Netherlands and England, as well as many conferences here and abroad. She served on the Governor's Conference on Vocational-Technical Education. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 PM July 8, 2010 at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis. Reception will follow at 4:00 PM at the Minneapolis Club, 729 2nd Avenue S., Minneapolis. Memorials may be directed to Opportunity Partners or the Animal Humane Society.
