Dr. Sam Vardalos Obituary Dr. Samual P. Vardalos
Of Plymouth, MN passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Veterans Home on November 11th, 2012. Born in Minneapolis, MN on October 15th, 1919, he was the son of the late Peter and Chrisoula Vardalos of Monstichey, Greece. Survived by wife Marilyn Vardalos; daughters Pamela Vardalos and Candy Quinn; grandchildren Lucas Leddy(Karen), Jennifer Quinn, Kasee Quinn (Eric), Heather Smith-Dickerson (Dave), and Shawn Smith; great grandson, Cole Smith-Walter. Preceded in death by first wife Annette Holter; parents, Peter and Chrisoula; siblings, Mary, Theodore (Ted), Elaine, and Caroline (Kay).
Sam graduated from Central High School in 1939. During high school he was the captain of the all-star basketball team, as well as an honored player with Centrals championship football team. Sam went on to attend the University of MN where he played for the MN Gophers, and then attended Northwestern College of Chiropractic where he received his Doctoral degree in Chiropractic.
Sam was a highly decorated veteran of World War II where he served with the 6th Armored Division in England, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany. As a platoon leader, Sam was awarded the Silver Star Medal for demonstrating unusual courage during an enemy attack on 1/4/45 in Marvie, Belgium, exposing himself to enemy fire to give the infantry the supported fire necessary for the success of their operations.
Sam owned the Lowry Avenue Chiropractic Clinic in Minneapolis where he was in private practice for over 45 years, retiring at age 75. During his years in practice Sam ate lunch every day at Jax Caf in Northeast Minneapolis. Sam was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, ski jumping and camping.
He will always be remembered for his infectious smile and burly bear hugs.
Private services will be held at the David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata, MN and interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. A special thanks to the staff at the Veterans Home of Minnesota for their dedication and care over the past 4 years.
