Edith Lund Obituary
Lund, Edith of Long Lake, returned to her celestial home on Aug., 8, 2009. She died of complications from a series of strokes and circulatory problems. Edith Lund was truly a daughter of Norway. She was born in 1918 and grew up in Boy River, MN. She was one of eight children, in a family hit by both tuberculosis and polio. Edith lost her mother when she was 5 years old. She attended a one-room school house: Huset School in Cass County, MN. Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Donald W. Lund; parents Bernt Karelius Engebretsen and Johanne Gulbrandsdatter-Klundelien Engebretsen who emigrated from Kongsberg, Norway with their 1st born. Siblings who preceded Edith were George (Bessie) Engebretsen; Hank (Lou) Engebretsen, sisters: Edna Engebretsen, Agnes (""Bobbie"") Olson, Jean Dettmann, Dorothy E. Nelson and Ethel Engebretsen, nephews George (Bud) Engebretsen and Ray Engebretsen. She is survived by her son, Roger L. (Jenelle) Pelika, three grandchildren: Nile (Elle) Pelika, Megan and Karl Pelika; two great-grandchildren, Paige and Jacob Pelika. In turn, she is survived by devoted neighbors/caretakers and friends, Keith & Anita Vandenbranden and their son Eric. Edith's family is indebted to their loving service to both Edie (and Donald Lund). If Edie didn't adopt you, you adopted her. Edie is also survived by brother-in- law, Willard C. Nelson, nephews: Dennis (Ladonna) Engebretsen; Richard C. Nelson; Jim (Sally) Engebretsen; Dale Engebretsen; Russell Dettmann, Ronald (Carolyn) Engebretsen, as well as niece, Connie Nelson Ahlberg who felt Aunt Edie became her second mother. Edith served everyone she was near, whether as a waitress at the Pickwick Restaurant in Duluth, Harry's Restaurant in Mpls., or family, neighbors and friends. She survived many things: poverty and adversity, but through her constant perseverance and the industry of the old country in her bones, and the love and laughter of her sisters, she did everything she set out to do. She could bake better than a bakery, serve a Thanksgiving meal from heaven, bake a ham for a widower, knit a cap for a grand- nephew; & fix a muffler with a baking powder can. She worked hard all her life; and when she got a bit weary of that, she turned artist. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff at Warm Hands, Kind Hearts who cared for Edith, for their excellent care, in particular, June Haugen, who Ede loved and felt blessed to have by her side. In addition, thank you to all hospice caregivers as well as Chaplin Ruth. A memorial service for Edith will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, August 13 at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 Wayzata Blvd. E., Wayzata, MN 55391. Visitation one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, American Lung Association. David Lee Funeral Home Wayzata 952-473-5577
