Guido Rahr Obituary
Guido Reinhardt Rahr, Jr. died May 3, surrounded by his family at their home on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. He was seventy-six years old and died from the effects of leukemia. Guido was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and attended the Arizona Desert School, Philips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College. He served as a cartographer and in the ski patrol in the United States Army in Germany after the war. In 1956 he moved to Portland, Oregon where he was vice president of Great Western Malting Company. There he married Laurie Malarkey and together they had five children. In 1971 the Rahr family moved to Minnesota where Guido became President, CEO and later Chairman of the Rahr Malting Company, a family business founded 1847. Guido was a committed sportsman and conservationist throughout his life. He served on the Boards of the Manitowoc Company, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, The Yellowstone Association, the Guthrie Theater, and the Boone & Crocket Club. He was a founder of the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School, served as president of the Voyageur Outward Bound School, and was a trustee of Reed College and Emma Willard School. He was also a member of the American Alpine Club. Among Guido's great passions were mountaineering, hunting, poetry, and art. He was an old world gentleman and romantic who was equally at home hunting chamois in the Alps or hiking on his beloved ranch in Montana. Above all he was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Laurie; and his children, Guido and Lee Rahr of Portland, Oregon; Sarah and Ben Fortna of London; Gretel and Jim Pauly of Longmont, Colorado; Christina and Laurie Lane-Zucker of Great Barrington, Massachusetts; and William and Markell Rahr of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, his brother Frederick Rahr of Bloomington, Minnesota and sister Petrea Rahr Stern of Lake Forest, Illinois.
