Hugh Hourston Craigie Weed III passed away peacefully into heaven on June 28, 2026, at Folkstone Senior Living in Wayzata, MN. He had been surrounded by his devoted wife, Lauren, family, and friends from the community in support throughout the recent months.

A Life Rooted in Tradition

Born on August 1, 1938, in Colorado Springs, CO, to Hugh Weed Jr. and Ruth Stevens Weed, Hugh enjoyed a wonderful childhood surrounded by family and friends. His early years were defined by summers spent at family homes in South China, ME, and Mohican Point on the shores of Lake George in Bolton Landing, NY. As a fourth-generation descendant at Mohican Point, Hugh fostered a love for that special place that he passed down to his children and grandchildren; remarkably, his descendants now represent the seventh generation to enjoy family time on those shores.

Education and Career

Hugh followed in his father’s footsteps to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, where he played hockey and lacrosse. He began his collegiate journey at Dartmouth College before transferring to Colorado College. While active in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at CC, his focus shifted after meeting Ann Gordon of Kansas City, KS. The two married just before his senior year. Hugh graduated with a BS in Accounting and earned his CPA shortly thereafter.

Hugh’s professional life was delayed when he was drafted into the U.S. Army after college, which took him to El Paso, TX and Mount Clemens, MI over two years before starting at Arthur Andersen & Co. in Chicago, a role that brought his young family to Arlington Heights, IL. The town became more than just a home; it was a source of lifelong friendships that led to legendary shared trips and experiences. Hugh later served as a finance executive for two companies and enjoyed a successful career in software sales for Dun & Bradstreet.

Passions and Character

A natural athlete, Hugh loved snow and water skiing, tennis, and golf. He was equally at home "off-road" in his Jeep CJ-5 with the family dog or out on the water in his motorboat or rowing shell.

Hugh was also a devoted father and a grandfather who loved spending quality time with and teaching his grandchildren, whether it was how to drive a car, a boat or anything he felt was of interest to know. In times of need he showed up for his family, guiding with wisdom.

Most of all, Hugh will be remembered as a "genuinely nice person", whose friendliness meant he never met a stranger. He enjoyed volunteering, including with Junior Achievement early in his adult life and transporting homebound seniors to church in later years. He was a true gentleman, and he possessed a sincere interest in the lives of others, always willing to lend a hand or share in a good time. He was a man who loved to have fun and brought a lighthearted spirit to every room he entered.

A Second Chapter

In 2005, Hugh was fortunate to find love a second time when he married Lauren Schaus. The couple, who were conveniently seated next to each other at a 2002 wedding by a host who knew they would hit it off, spent the last 24 years enjoying life together. Following their marriage, their home base was in Wheaton, IL before moving to Wayzata, MN in 2015. Beyond those homes, they also enjoyed Lauren’s properties in Lake Geneva, WI and Boca Raton, FL, while making sure to return to Lake George each year while they could. Hugh and Lauren shared a full life that included traveling, playing golf, and boating on Lake Geneva and Lake George.

Legacy

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Jr. and Ruth Weed, and his siblings, Peter, John, and Nancy Weed. He is survived by: his wife, Lauren Weed; his first wife, Ann Weed; his daughter, Ginger McMahan (Bill) and their children, Kelsey and Kenna; his son, Brian Weed (Janet) and their children, Jordan (Lauren), Benjamin, and Jessica (Spencer Murphy); his great-granddaughter: Kaia (Daughter of Jordan & Lauren); and his step-family, Lauren’s daughter Kelly Morton (Rob) and their children and grandchildren, and Lauren’s son Kevin Schaus (Lisa) and his children.

Memorial Service

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Westgate Church, 705 County Road 101, Plymouth, MN. Visitation begins at 10am and the memorial service is at 11am, followed by a luncheon immediately afterwards.
