James 'Jim' Mahoney Obituary James Michael Mahoney ("Jim"), of Meadowlakes, TX and formerly of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior on January 5, 2025 at the age of 87. Jim was born in St. Paul, MN on October 31, 1937 as the youngest of seven children.
Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa M. Peterson, his parents, Geoffrey P. and Mary Sexton Mahoney, his brothers, Geoffrey J. Mahoney, Dr. Paul S. Mahoney, Richard P. Mahoney, and his sisters, Mary Catherine Baumgaertner, Elizabeth Spillane, and Margaret Ann McMahon.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Ann (Connor) Mahoney, his children, Paul (Kerry), Timothy (Gina), James (Lori), Patrick (Angela), Colleen, and son-in-law, Mark B. Peterson. He was a devoted grandfather to Stephen Peterson, Jack Peterson, David Peterson, Anthony Mahoney, Aidan Mahoney, Connor Mahoney, and Kathryn Mahoney. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jack McMahon, many nieces and nephews, and extended family.
Jim graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy in 1955, and obtained his undergraduate degree from Creighton University in 1959. Jim attended the Indiana University School of Law and completed his L.L.B. degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1965. His determination propelled him to work full-time during the day, attend law classes in the evenings, while simultaneously raising a growing family with Mary Ann. Jim was admitted to the bar in 1965 and continued to practice law as a trial attorney at Mahoney, Dougherty, and Mahoney until age 70. He was a well-respected litigator and a member of many legal, insurance, and corporate defense-related associations.
In addition to practicing law, Jim spent two years on active duty in the Army and 31 years in the Army Reserves as a Judge Advocate General officer, retiring with the rank of Colonel. As a very patriotic man, Jim was especially proud of his military service and accomplishments.
Jim met the love of his life, Mary Ann, in Omaha, NE while in college, and they married in 1960. Jim adored his wife and repeatedly stated throughout his life, "Mary Ann was the best thing that ever happened to me!" They spent the first several years of their marriage in Indiana while Jim was on active duty in the Army. Jim and Mary Ann spent the majority of their married lives in Minnesota raising their family. They enjoyed traveling the world together and spent their final years residing in a suburb of Austin, TX. To temper the joy of his marriage and family, Jim was a long-suffering football fan of both the Minnesota Gophers and Vikings.
As a child born to a man who immigrated to St. Paul, MN from Ireland, alone and in his late teens, and who went on to become a distinguished trial attorney in the Twin Cities, Jim was a firm believer in the "American Dream." Jim valued faith, courage, resolve, determination, leadership, generosity, honesty, and integrity. He instilled those values in his children and his colleagues. Jim never forgot his fathers origins and lived to honor the opportunities that he himself had been given. Jim was a true gentleman who dressed impeccably and believed it was extremely important to always do ones best.
