James 'Jim' Stein Obituary On July 8, 2024, James "Jim" Hogan Stein, of Minnetrista, Minnesota passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus at home surrounded by family. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania on April 18, 1952 to William and Isabell (Flack) Stein. He graduated from McKeesport High School in 1970. He was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh on a full football scholarship, where he played for 4 years. Jim graduated from the University with a BA in Business Finance in 1974. Jim married Jacqueline (Jones) Stein on July 6, 1974 and they enjoyed 39 years together before her passing. They lived in Missouri, Iowa and Fairmont, Minnesota before settling in Plymouth, Minnesota where they raised their daughter Heather. Jim grew to love horses and Kansas basketball while supporting her in her interests. Jim held positions in management of bulk grain commodities for Pillsbury and ConAgra Foods, until his retirement. He was an exceptional athlete who enjoyed all sports, particularly tennis, golf, and paddleball. He loved to travel, was an avid woodworker, gardener, and cook. His life was enriched when he met and fell in love with Penny Kodrich. With their shared love of entertaining, travel, and golf, they enjoyed many adventures together. She lovingly cared for him in her home as his health declined. Jim was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disease in 2015. To help find a cure, Jim participated monthly in an experimental research program from 2017-2019 at the University of California/San Francisco Neurological Research Institute. Typical of Jims spirit, his stated goal for participating in the study was to ultimately help find a cure for others, if not for himself. Throughout his life, Jim emulated a love of life, humor, and extreme kindness. He loved the Lord, his family, and all his friends. Jim delighted in time spent with his only grandchild Bennett; whether flying paper airplanes off the deck or watching movies, they shared many laughs together. Grandpa Jim was even able to attend a few baseball games to cheer on his favorite player. As he faced his relentless disease, he never quit. He faced life with amazing grace, courage, and hope. He will be dearly missed. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Isabell Stein, and his loving wife, Jacque. He is survived by his daughter, Heather (Jay) Homuth and grandson, Bennett, Plymouth Minnesota; sister, Kathy (Bob) Ober, Pittsburgh Pennslyvania; partner, Penny Kodrich, Minnetrista Minnesota; Aunt Sally, Newton, Pennslyvania; and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cure PSP Foundation are preferred. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, 2:00pm at Westgate Church, 705 County Rd. 101, Plymouth, MN with a reception following.
