Janet McMillan Obituary
McMillan, Janet A., age 84, of Wayzata died peacefully at home Saturday, August 13, 2016. She was born in Minneapolis on August 18, 1931, to Helen (Wilkinson) and Robert Archambo and grew up splitting time between Edina and Miami Beach. Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Howard I. McMillan, Jr. and her beloved kid sister Helen Sellwood Hield.
She was graduated from Northrup Collegiate School and Pine Manor Junior College where she received her Associate of Arts degree and went on to the University of Minnesota and Alpha Phi Sorority to earn her teaching certificate from the College of Education.
Janet lived her adult life in the Lake Minnetonka area. She was an intelligent woman, an adventurous spirit who embraced new challenges in every stage of her life. She served on various boards and committees in the Twin Cities, including the Minneapolis Junior League, Abbott-Northwestern Hospital auxiliary, The Blake School AFS Exchange Chair; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; as partner and officer in Gold Mine Antiques, Inc. specializing in appraisals and estate sales.
Janet was active, civically-minded and a life-long learner. Her keen sense of duty included her 35 years as an election judge for Wayzata and Long Lake. She devoted considerable energy serving her appointments to the Minnesota Citizens Advisory Committee for Enviroment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and as commissioner to the Metropolitan Parks and Open Space Commission, and Three Rivers Park District Foundation board member.
She loved being involved with her family and enjoyed the wonderful friendships she acquired through the years. A devout Christian, she self-lessly served her faith communities of St. Martins-by-the-Lake and later the Wayzata Community Church. Her many hobbies included knitting, bridge, mah-jongg, gardening, fishing and golf. Janet is survived by her daughter, Tammis McMillan (Joe Kochenderfer) of Long Lake; sons, Howard I. McMillan III (Lili) of Orono and Robert Langdon McMillan of Boston, MA; her grandchildren, Katherine McMillan (Charles Hensel), Alexander M. Vibbard, Marguerite McMillan; J. Monroe Vibbard (Natalie Haugen); sister-in-law, Elizabeth McMillan Ringer of Wayzata and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial service at 11 AM on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Wayzata Community Church (in the chapel), 125 East Wayzata Boulevard, Wayzata. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorials may be directed to Three Rivers Park District Foundation or donor's choice.
