John McGrory Obituary
McGrory, John Francis Former Cargill Executive, Husband, Father, Grandfather of Wayzata, Minn and Sequim, Wash, age 77, died Feb. 22, 2007. He grew up in North Adams, Mass, graduated from Drury High School, Williams College and Harvard Law School. He was a US Navy Lieutenant from 1951-1953, serving on the U.S.S. Mulliphen. He married Elizabeth Ann Shaw in North Adams on June 16, 1953. The couple moved to Wayzata in 1955 where John began his 40 year career at Cargill, Inc. He retired in 1994 as General Counsel, Senior Vice-President and Secretary to the Board of Directors. He remained active in the Catholic Church his entire life. He served as chairman of the St. Paul Archdiocese School Board, and spent his life dedicating his talents to local Catholic churches and schools, including St. Bartholomew's, Wayzata; Holy Name of Jesus, Medina; and for the last 12 years Queen of Angels in Port Angeles, Wash., where he was a lector and for the past six years chairman of the Finance Committee. He was very active in the Outward Bound organization, and served for many years as a trustee of the Voyageur Outward Bound School and chairman of Outward Bound's National Safety Committee. In the 1960s he was active in Minnesota politics, serving as the Chairman of the Hennepin County Republican Party and as a delegate to the Republic Convention in 1964. In the 1970s he was a member of the National Ski Patrol, volunteering at several Minnesota ski areas. Throughout his life, he generously offered counsel to many friends, neighbors, parishioners and community groups who sought his advice. He loved spending time with his family and sharing his passion for canoeing, fishing and exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. John and Elizabeth enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Ely where their children and grandchildren would visit every summer. After his retirement, he and Elizabeth moved to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington where he enjoyed fly fishing, golfing, reading and caring for his dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Francis McGrory and Mary Emily (Betti) McGrory of North Adams, Mass. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Ann of Sequim, Wash, and Wayzata, Minn; his children, Ann (Mike) Nolan of Port Angeles, Wash., John (Leslie Root) of Portland, Ore., Mary (Ed Usset) McGrory-Usset of Mendota Heights, Minn., Susan (Don) Smith of Plymouth, Minn., Elizabeth (Bernie) Baltich of Ely, Minn., Molly (Mike) May of Spokane, Wash. and Jim (Martha) McGrory of St. Paul, Minn., and grand- children, Jay, Lucy and Madeline Nolan; Gracey McGrory; Joe, Peter and Emily Usset; Jessica and Jackie Smith; Ben, Zack and Daniel Baltich; Michael and Katie May; and Kate, Nicholas and Anna McGrory. Funeral services will be held 1:30 pm March 2, 2007 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Medina with visitation 1 hour prior to service at church.
