Kenneth Iverson Obituary
Kenneth Gary Iverson, age 78, passed away just as he would have wanted, peacefully in his sleep on the morning of November 12, 2016, near his bride of 59 years, Marilyn Iverson.
Ken, or Gary, as some loved ones called him, is preceded in death by his best friend and brother, Donald Iverson, his parents, Kenneth and Gladys Iverson, brother-in-law, Don Crain, dear friend, Denny Wilson, plus numerous other friends and family. His is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his brothers, Douglas and Richard Iverson, his four children, Dawn Johnson, Greg Iverson (Fran), Kenneth Iverson (Sue), and Kristin Jones (Doug). He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, who have been a constant source of joy in his life, Jenny Johnson, Robert Johnson, Caitlin Iverson, K.C. Iverson, Jack Iverson, Grace Iverson, Sarah Iverson, Cooper Jones and Sophie Jones.
Ken grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt Senior High School in 1956. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Ann Mills, on November 9, 1957. They raised their four children together in Minneapolis, at their beloved home on E. 53rd St., moved for a couple of short years to Omaha, NE, and finally settled in Plymouth, MN.
Ken was a long time employee of Northwestern Bell Corporation, working there for 30 years before retiring early to spend time in one of his favorite places, the north woods of MN, with his wife and family, doing the things he loved. There, he met and spent time with many dear friends including George Paras and Rollie Blakely.
Throughout his life he liked: fishing, crossword puzzles, Marilyn's cooking, a good root beer, a few sips of Wild Turkey on Christmas Eve, campfires, dogs, car rides, south Minneapolis, guns (especially "Smitty"), classic country music, being around kids, following the stock market, cheeseburgers, bowling, coaching basketball, wrestling with Greg and Kenneth, horses, french fries, being "up North", fixing stuff for his kids, a cold PBR, being at family farms, telling his kids he used to be a Viking (think ship, not football), classical music, listening to his police scanner, and spending time out in the prairie.
He loved: His Family. (and coffee).
Ken was loyal, logical, honest, goofy, wise, and deepy loved.
He advised us that, should this day ever come, we were not to make a big deal out of this whole funeral thing, telling us he'd prefer if we'd just play a little Waylon and Willie, spend some time together, and maybe have a Pepsi. As usual, we did our best, but we didn't exactly listen. "Whatever's right", right, Dad?
The Iverson family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the various kidney specialists, heart specialists, doctors, nurses, and dialysis technicians, both at North Memorial hospital, and at Fresenius Dialysis Center. Your hard work gave us some very special years.
An open house to remember Ken will be held at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 E Wayzata Blvd in Wayzata, MN on Thursday, November 17 from 5 to 7pm. There will be a short service at 6pm. All are invited.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis, which is a charity Ken donated to previously.
