Kenneth John Thorson1939 – October 26, 2026
Kenneth John Thorson, 87, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, passed away on October 26, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, a family he dearly loved, and a life well lived.
Born and raised in Rockford, Illinois, Ken graduated from Drake University in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he began a chapter of his life that would remain especially meaningful to him. Following Officer Training School in Newport, Rhode Island, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy in 1962 and served aboard the USS Midway until 1965.His Navy years were an important part of his life. Long after the Midway became a permanent museum in San Diego, Ken never missed an opportunity to visit his old ship during trips to California. Those visits were always a highlight, as was sharing his treasured Midway book with his grandchildren. He could easily spend an hour turning its pages, telling stories, and reliving a time in his life of which he was so proud.
Ken went on to build a successful 40-year career in the investment business, retiring in 2006 as a partner in Speece Thorson Capital Group. He genuinely enjoyed his work and the relationships he built along the way. But for all his professional accomplishments and the pride he took in his Navy service, nothing meant more to Ken than his family. He loved being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He took enormous pride in his children and grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments, enjoying their company, and taking a genuine interest in their lives. Whether sharing a story, taking the family out to eat, enjoying Swedish pancakes with more than enough butter, offering a little guidance, or simply enjoying time together, Ken created memories that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Ken shared 35 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Sharon. Together they built a life filled with family, friendships, travels, laughter, and the countless ordinary moments that, in the end, become the most treasured memories. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his dignity, his humor, his loyalty, and, above all, his love for the people who were fortunate enough to be part of his life.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Bernt and Margaret; his brother, Ron; and his precious great-granddaughter, Lucy.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Sharon; his children, Chris (Lara), Jennifer (Todd), and Eric (Juliette); his grandchildren, Sophia (Miles), Grace, Bergen, Gavin, Tryggve, and Gabrielle; and his great-granddaughter, Emma. Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to Renae, Michael, Molly, Jen, and Jackie for the extraordinary care, kindness, and compassion they gave Ken. You became an important part of his life, and your love and dedication will always be remembered.
