Obituary

Leora Hansen Obituary Hansen, Leora M. "Lee" Age 97, of Wayzata. Born Nov. 29, 1917, passed away on December 30, 2014. Born in Little Falls, MN, Lee had a passion for learning, a love of art and music, and a bit of a rebel spirit. Lee played baritone sax in the Little Falls high school and city bands, and soon after was one of the first women in the University of MN Bands. She later became a charter member of the Band Alumni Assn., continuing to play at Gopher events into her 80's. At the U she was one of an early group of women in the Architecture school. After graduating, she worked in interior design, creating store window displays for Schune-man's department store in St. Paul. Marching in Schuneman's drum corps in the 1947 Winter Carnival parade, Lee met future husband Roy at the Gopher Grill in the St. Paul Hotel. They married later that year - a marriage that lasted 62-1/2 years. After raising sons Alan and Gary to school age, she went to work for the Wayzata school district, enjoying many years of friendship with teachers and staff there. Her family lived in the Wayzata area for over 50 years. A member of Wayzata Community Church, Lee taught Sunday School while Roy ushered. Lee loved arts and crafts of all sorts. She painted in a number of styles, was active at the Minnetonka Art Center and later with a Japanese painting group. She also explored woodcarving. Lee loved to knit Scandinavian sweaters, finishing nearly 100 that are treasured by friends and family. Always curious about something new, Lee was a charter member of the Minnetonka Seniors Computer Interest Group. Lee and Roy volunteered at the Landscape Arboretum, helping to maintain its Japanese Gardens. She loved working in her backyard garden as well. Lee loved animals - from childhood she was seldom without a cat or dog - or both! Memorials to the Animal Humane Society would be appreciated. (845 Meadow Ln N, Golden Valley MN 55422). Preceded in death by parents Leo & Clara Thompson, sister Carol and husband Roy. Survived by sons Alan (Diane) and Gary (Mary), brothers Wayne and Keith and extended loving family. Lee will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with Roy. There will be a visitation on Wed., January 7th, 1:30 to 3:00 pm, at David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata (1220 E Wayzata Blvd). A brief remembrance will be held at 2:00.
