Louise Gabbert Obituary
Louise Marion Engstrom Gabbert was kindness and goodness personified. Her quiet strength and dignity inspired all who knew her. Louise died peacefully in her home August 10 at age 96. Her husband, Don Gabbert, the love of her life, preceded her in death in 1999. Devoted to her family, her greatest joy was in being a homemaker and mother. Her daughter, Donna Gabbert Beck (Warren), and her sons, John Gabbert (Martha) and Jim Gabbert (Barb), will miss her greatly. Her son Tom Gabbert passed in 1999. She is also survived by her devoted grandchildren Heidi, Steven, Laura, Annie, Paula Beck, Paul, Amy Strom, Peter Beck, Michael, Mari Weisman, Julia and Allison. Her loving great-grandchildren include Jane, Charlie, Ellie, Griffin, Ingrid, Ava, Paige, Theo, Harrison, Sabina, Nora and Hazel. Rene Hentges, her "adopted" granddaughter, provided 15 years of devoted and loving care.
Cecelia Marie Anderson Engstrom and Charles Harold Engstrom, her Swedish immigrant parents, welcomed her birth on February 29, 1920. She admired and loved her older brother Paul Engstrom who preceded her in death. Louise had many friends from all chapters of her life. Many of her favorite friends were from her North Minneapolis childhood.
Louise and Don wintered in Key Largo, FL for over 30 years. Avid art lovers, they began painting in watercolors, taking classes throughout the U.S. Over the years they donated many paintings in support of the Key Largo Medical Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Minneapolis and the Boy Scouts of America. Louise and Don were very involved with and generous to the Gabbert Raptor Center at the UofM. Her children remember her singing along with musicals when they were young; Louise had a lovely soprano voice and performed with a singing group in Key Largo for many years.
Louise loved nature, wildlife and beauty in all things. She surrounded herself with bird feeders that were heavily populated year round. An avid gardener, she was exceptional at arranging flowers and derived joy in doing so. Louise delighted in creating a beautiful home environment for her family.
A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, August 18, at 3:00 p.m. at Wayzata Community Church, 125 Wayzata Blvd East, Wayzata. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota.
