Lucille Regan Obituary
Lucille Mae (Kammerer) Regan, age 94, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, died on October 18, 2012.
Lucille was born in Minneapolis, MN, on July 9, 1918, the fifth of five children of Anna (Kelzer) and Harry Kammerer. Lucilles father died in the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918, three months after her birth. Anna supported Lucille and her siblings as a tailor and raised her family at their home in North Minneapolis.
Lucille graduated from North High School in 1937 and went to work as a stenographer at the state employment service. Shortly thereafter, she met John Regan, a young medical student and another North Minneapolis native. She charmed him with her grace and beauty, and sealed the deal with the terrific club sandwich she made for him on their second date. The two were married on December 28, 1940. During World War II, while John served as a Navy doctor in the Pacific, Lucille served at home with daughter Marguerite and son Jack. Tim, Kevin, Mary, Chris, and Peter all came later, and in that order.
Employing original North Minneapolis common sense, Lucille, along with John, raised seven children and successfully dealt with the challenges of a large family. Amidst the demands of raising her family, she developed a passion for cooking. Her lifelong cookbook includes recipes ranging from the exotic from a year the Regan family spent in Hawaii to the traditional Midwestern, from a lifetime spent in Minnesota. Nobody ever cooked a better pot of bean soup, served with home baked bread.
Lucille and John enjoyed many years watching their children grow and create families of their own. During their 55 years together, they traveled, gardened, and spent many happy evenings in their beloved Wayzata backyard with family and friends. In the final years of Lucilles life, she joined the Kenwood senior community. She continued to enjoy the good things in life friends, family, and ice cream. In John Regans words, she was a dear heart until the moment she died.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Regan, Sr., MD; sisters Ruth Mullin, Helen Engel and Harriet Rokusek; and one brother, James Kammerer. She is survived by children Marguerite Sandberg; John Regan, Jr., MD, and wife Jane; Timothy Regan and wife Jennifer; Kevin Regan and wife Bobette; Mary Gilbertson and husband Rolf; Christopher Regan and wife Peggy; Peter Regan and Patti Regan; twenty-three grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank special hospice friend Marcy Juhnke, hospice nurse Peggy Claude, and the superb care staff at the Kenwood Apartments.
Visitation at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 23rd at the church of Saint Thomas the Apostle, 2914 W. 44th Street, Minneapolis 44510, followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 AM.
