M. Carter Obituary M. Carolyn Carter January 16, 1927 February 26, 2024 Mildred "Carolyn" Carter died after a brief illness and a long and interesting life; she was 97. Born in her Rockford, Tennessee home, she grew up in the bucolic setting of her Anderson family farm while enjoying access to friends in Maryville and education in Knoxville. Formative early experiences included observing her parents struggle to keep the farm during the Great Depression and, as World War II began, writing letters to high school classmates who had joined the war effort. She was an avid football fan attending all games from junior high through her four years at the University of Tennessee. Soon after graduating from the University of Tennessee, Carolyn married her beloved Arthur (Art) on November 23, 1949. Their three children were the center of her life. Arts work brought moves from Maryville, TN to Glenshaw, PA, to Wenatchee, WA, to Upper St. Clair, PA, to New Martinsville, WV, and to Valley Forge, PA. Her husbands untimely death when Carolyn was 50, her greatest crisis and the turning point in her life, brought forth remarkable qualities. Drawing on her reservoir of faith and the example of her parents who persevered through difficulties, Carolyn completed her most important task, launching her youngest child and diving into the work world. She succeeded in sales, promoting products and services that she considered valuable and important. Carolyns Christian faith was the foundation of her life. Always active in church, she especially enjoyed singing in the choir. A bonus is that one of the choirs organized overseas singing tours, enabling her to travel to the British Isles, Europe, Russia, Brazil, and Cuba. Carolyn was ordained as a deacon. In addition to local mission projects with the church, she volunteered for several years at Graterford Prison, tending to prisoners families in the family waiting room when they visited. In her final twelve years, Carolyn lived with her daughter Anne in Minneapolis. She welcomed the familiarity of a home setting and the companionship of family dogs. Living in Minnesota made it easier for her to spend time at the family cabin, a dearly loved setting she enjoyed for 74 summers, appreciated not only for its natural beauty but as the repository of a lifetime of family memories. Carolyn is survived by her son Richard (Rebekah), son Robert (Diana), and daughter Anne; four grandchildren, Nathan (Melanie), Justin (Ashley), Alison (Stephen), and Jason (deceased); four great-grandchildren, Jaycie, Rosalie, Emmeline and Tobias. Visitation will be at David Lee Funeral Home, Wayzata, Minnesota, March 8th, 2 pm 4 pm followed by a memorial service at 4:15pm.
