Obituary

Marjorie Humphrey Obituary Humphrey, Marjorie Ann Goodwin of Wayzata, died at home surrounded by family on Sept. 23, 2006. Courageous in life and in death, Marge will be fondly remembered for her strength, wit and boundless compassion for those in need. Her life centered on her family, her many dear friends, and countless others for whom she provided assistance and comfort. Even in her last days, Marge's concern was for others rather than for her own condition, and she was constantly hatching plans to help people in ways that mattered. Her strong spiritual nature combined with ongoing intellectual curiosity led to her great appreciation and respect for many faith traditions. Marge also kept abreast of current events with keen interest and empathy, and it is indicative of her character that less than two weeks before her death, in between visits with nurses and caregivers, she drove herself to the polls to vote. Always creative, she had a gift for planning meaningful ceremonies to mark significant events, and especially enjoyed rewriting the words to popular songs to celebrate loved ones. She taught her children volumes about how to live with curiosity, humor and a special appreciation for inspired stories and experiences. Marge was born and raised in San Francisco, CA, and graduated from University of California, Berkeley. She was working in the San Francisco area after college when she met and married Bill Humphrey. Shortly thereafter, Bill convinced her to move to Minnesota. They moved into the Highcroft neighborhood in Wayzata, where they raised four children and lived the rest of their lives. Throughout this time, Marge was actively involved in many community organizations, including St. Edward the Confessor Church (founding member), St. Martin's by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, Interfaith Outreach, Highcroft School Library, Boys and Girls Club of Minneapolis, Abbott-Northwestern Hospital Auxiliary, and Friends of the Art Institute. She assisted with many political campaigns, and was a leader of the organization Insights -- a lecture series of women speakers -- and the Dick Byrd Foundation, which brought exceptional speakers annually to St. Martin's Church. She was part of a small prayer group of women for over thirty years, that was affectionately named The Sisterhood. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother, all of San Francisco, and by her loving husband, William R. Humphrey, Jr. She is already missed by her children and grandchildren: daughter, Ann Humphrey and husband Phil Shephard; son, Will Humphrey and wife Ellen, and their children William, Nicholas and Davis; son, Andrew Humphrey and wife Alison, and their children Clare, George and Grace; and daughter, Kathryn Humphrey. Marge's family would like to thank the dream team, a wonderful group of talented and compassionate nurses and caregivers: Eva, Paula, Katie, Julie, Pam of Abbott-Northwestern Hospice, Kim, Tenzin, Christine, and Marianne. Services will be held at St. Martin's by-the-Lake Church, Minnetonka Beach, at 4 PM on Friday, September 29th. Memorials may be directed to St. Martin's by-the-Lake Church, the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, or Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners in Wayzata.
