Mary O'Hara Obituary Mary Joan OHara passed away at home on June 9, 2025, following a long battle with Alzheimers disease.
Mary Jo, known affectionately as MJ, was born in Chicago on May 5, 1959, to James and Marjorie OHara, the fifth of six daughters. She graduated from Regina High School and earned her BA from Creighton University.
Mary Jo had a successful career as a travel event director, a role that allowed her to explore the world. MJs work coordinating trips with the organization, GoPhilanthropic, brought her great joy. She championed their mission: empowering community-led partners working across the globe. Her efforts to improve the lives of others was grounded in her Catholic faith, which had always guided how she treated others with empathy and kindness.
MJ met her husband Tim by chance through mutual friends, and from the start, theirs was a connection built on easy conversation, playful mischief, and shared values. What started with laughter and adventurous travels grew into an enduring partnership. Their love story could have come straight out of a romantic comedy. They married on November 22, 1986, and spent the next few decades raising their three children: Matthew, Meghan, and Laura. MJ was a devoted and loving mother who poured her heart and soul into raising her children. Whether offering a warm hug and a reassuring smile or decidedly winning at family board games, she was an amazing mom loving, caring, and fun.
Growing up with five close sisters, MJ understood the value of family and friendship. She built community wherever she went, from the close-knit families at church to the neighborhood book club, that grew into lifelong friendships. MJ was a wonderful friend: loyal, kind, generous, and always ready to share a laugh.
She excelled in everything she put her mind to, whether it was organizing school fundraisers, rollerblading marathons, or volunteering at her church. MJ also had a deep love of music. It was always playing in her home, where you could find her dancing in the kitchen baking cookies.
Mary Jo is survived by her husband Tim, son Matthew (Missy), daughters Meghan (Peter) and Laura (Beau), her grandchildren Wyatt, Rosemarie, Hannah, and Timothy, and her beloved Westie Harry. She is also survived by her sisters Katherine (Gary) Geragi, Marjorie (John) Rackliffe, Carolyn (Ron) Liptak, Alice O'Hara (Kevin Walker), Ann's husband Peter Graff, and many nieces and nephews.
