Obituary

Mary Wickman Obituary Wickman, Mary J. Age 75, of Minnetonka, died September 18 after a battle with cancer. Mary is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles R. Wickman; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Dianne Wickman of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; daughter and son-in-law Kristin and Richard Albrecht of Round Lake, Illinois; daughter and son-in-law, Margot Wickman-Bennett and Edward Bennett of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Lauren and Erik Wickman of Oconomowoc, and grandchildren Morgan and Erin Bennett of Omaha. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Veneta Larson of Wells, Michigan. Mary graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in speech therapy in January of 1957. She worked as a speech therapist in area elementary schools in Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis and Glendora, California, focusing on children with special needs. After living in Glendora for 16 years the family settled in Minnetonka in 1977. Mary enjoyed a life-long commitment to children with special needs and was a long-time volunteer with The PACER Center, an organization dedicated to educating others and improving the lives of children with disabilities, and Hopkins Public School SEAC (Special Education Advisory Committee), an organization focused on advocating for special needs children. In her work with The PACER Center, Mary served as a puppeteer traveling to area schools giving performances to raise awareness of issues faced by children with special needs. Mary also enjoyed a life-long love of classical music. She played the violin and piano, encouraged and supported her children's interest and participation in music and regularly attended musical performances throughout the Twin Cities with her husband or other friends. In addition, Mary loved fishing, bridge, cooking, gardening, swimming, yoga and spending time with her family. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Charles and especially loved their trips to Alaska and the Galapagos Islands. She will be remembered for her for her kindness, selflessness, and endless interest in others. Mary was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Minnetonka. Visitation Friday, September 24, 2010, 5-8 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 13000 St. David Road, Minnetonka, and one hour prior to the funeral service. Funeral service Saturday, September 25, 2010, 11 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, with reception to follow afterward at the church. Memorials to The PACER Center, 8161 Normandale Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Attention: Count Me In Program.
