Obituary

Patricia Crump Obituary Crump, Patricia Kennedy Pat is dead. My beautiful red- headed artist with a wonderful sense of humor is gone. No more sketching afternoons. No more working together in the studio. A huge, blank empty, empty space that can never be filled. She was an artist first and last. That's how she saw herself, that was her identity. Life is art and art is life. Without art, why do you live? She felt that if she couldn't create art, what was the point of living? She felt that if the time came, that she couldn't be an artist, she wasn't interested in living. She was proud of the quality of her line. Her sense of color was wonderful, and she was starting to grow as an artist. A funny way to describe a 71 year old red head, but real artists grow until they die. She was starting to move away from the strictly representational to a looser style, strong and powerful. Her last pastel, still on the easel, has a power and presence that leaps off the paper. She gloried in putting color on paper. Pat was involved with, and was Superintendent of the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition for almost twenty years. A huge and complicated responsibility. She found jurors, organized the competition and made sure that it ran smoothly. Five years ago she was diagnosed with cataracts. The operation to fix them was not successful. You need two eyes for depth perception. Standing at an easel, you want to make a mark or line at a specific point. Without two good eyes this at best difficult, at worst impossible. To Pat this must have been the final blow. Her life was built around her skills as an artist. Her ability to draw. Her line quality. Without this, who was she? What was she? An artist or nothing? She made her decision. She was my best friend, my confidant, my help and inspiration for my poor sketches. She often joked that all she did was make lists, but I'm looking at rows (or lists) of her small pastels hanging on our studio wall. Oh God! Such beautiful, beautiful lists.
