Obituary

Philip Byers Obituary Byers, Philip Cammack Born May 1, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA; passed away on Easter morning at his home surrounded by his family. Grateful that he is at peace but missing him greatly are his loving wife of 47 years, Carolyn; son, John (Gina); daughter, Susan (William Traff); three grandsons, Mitchell Nixon Byers, Cammack Robert Byers and Philip Luce Traff. Also survived by his mother, Mary Byers; sister, Betty Robertson; brothers, William (Donnie) and Robert all of Kansas City and sister-in-law, Joan (Dennis) Shaver of St. Louis. Philip grew up in Kansas City and graduated in 1953 from Pembroke Country Day School. It was while a student at Dartmouth that a class in geology began his lifelong career in the petroleum business. Philip graduated in 1957 from Dartmouth, with Distinction, and in 1959 earned his Master of Science in Geology, with Honors, from the University of Kansas. In 1966, Philip received an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business. He began his career with Shell Oil Company in 1959. In 1966, Philip started with Apache Corporation as a marketing supervisor and he rose to Executive Vice President and General Manager. After leaving Apache, he became CEO of Hambro Gas and Oil, Inc. He also founded Byers Petroleum, Inc. which continues to manage oil and gas properties. Philip also served on numerous boards, was a Trustee for Pine Manor College and a past member of the Minneapolis Club. In his spare time, Philip involved himself with his real interest, the outdoors. After receiving his license from the U. S. Coast Guard to operate or navigate passenger carrying vessels, he formed the Boundary Waters Charter Company, one of the earliest Voyageur National Park Commercial Uses licenses. He was asked to participate in the Federal mediation process for Voyageurs National Park. Family was the most important part of his life. Philip loved his home and cabin on Crane Lake (Spirit Pines). Fall being his favorite time of year he enjoyed his yellow labs, hunting and fishing. He could often be found in the field pursuing pheasants or ducks behind his loyal labs with the camaraderie of his friends and family. Hockey provided many years of enjoyment while coaching young men in an intensely competitive sport. Watching Mitchell and Mack play hockey brought great joy and fond memories. Philip was a man of the highest integrity. He will be missed often and remembered fondly by those who knew him. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Thursday at Wayzata Community Church. Visitation 5-8pm Wednesday at David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata. Philip's final resting place, Spirit Pines on Crane Lake. The Byers family invites remembrances to be directed to St. David's Child Development Autism Therapy Program, 3395 Plymouth Road, Minnetonka, MN 55305.
