Phyllis Barton Obituary
Barton, Phyllis (nee Bock) age 80, of Wayzata, died peacefully on Nov. 6. Phyllis was born in Mpls., shortly thereafter the family moved out to Delano. By her college years, the family was back in Mpls. Phyllis graduated in 46 with a B.A. in Fine Arts and worked in advertising for the Baker Co. and Young Quinlans. Later, she went up to Alaska in early 53 to visit her dear friend Louise McLean. She ended up staying for three years: voting for statehood, skiing, hiking, camping, and working for a radio station in Anchorage. Phyllis went back to school in the late 50's and got her B.A. in Childhood Education, later completing her Masters. She taught kindergarten for 28 years for the Wayzata School District, and was a devoted and gifted teacher. She was still in touch with several families of former students. Phyllis was a very independent and active person who loved to travel, both in her early years and later after retirement she took many wonderful trips. She had many loves in her life, incl. books and cats, biking, sailing, and was downhill skiing until four years ago. She also did some rowing for an 8 person team after retirement. Phyllis was an artist at heart, she was proud of her handwork and loved sewing, knitting, wood carving, and also water color and rosemaling painting. Preceded in death by brother, Harvey W. Bock. Phyllis was also a very devoted mother and will be greatly missed by her son, Samuel H. Barton & his fiancee Sandy Mellon of Wayzata, MN and daughter, Susan B. Jackson of Pacific City, OR, and her cherished granddaughter, Annika Rose Jackson, also of Pacific City, OR, and the boys her companion cats later in life. Phyllis handled her life with grace, sharp wit and dignity. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral service November 10 Thursday, 1 PM at St. Mark's Cathedral, 519 Oak Grove St., Mpls. Visitation Wed., 4:30-7:00 PM at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 E. Wayzata Blvd., Wayzata. Interment at Mt. Olivet West Cemetery, Delano, MN. Memorials preferred to St. Mark's Cathedral.
