Obituary

Russell Howard Crowder, Jr. age 74 of Wayzata, passed away December 28, 2025. Preceded in death by his parents, Russell Howard Crowder, Sr. and Grace Ellen Crowder, as well as his loving wife, Deborah Haverstock Crowder, and beloved daughter, Chase Haverstock Crowder.

Russ practiced law for 40 years serving as a fierce advocate and sage counselor to his clients. A seasoned litigator representing criminal defendants as well as personal injury victims, Russ fervently believed in the rule of law and fairness. An ever-ready champion of the underdog, Russ never shied away from a challenge, or speaking truth to power, and he never lost his enthusiasm for "sticking it to the man."

While Russ was proud of his career, his greatest delight was his family; particularly, raising his two daughters. There aren't words to describe the depth of his love for his two girls and his grandchildren. A perennial student of life, Russ taught us to be curious about the world around us and to embrace joy even in grief. He loved his dogs, particularly his Newfoundland, Georgia; gardening through the changing seasons; riding his bike; smoking his cigars by firelight; and, almost any kind of live music. Russ was never happier than when he was talking to, debating with, or catching up with his friends. He was devoutly loyal to his buddies and treasured his life-long friendships. We will live by his mantra, "be good, have fun, learn a lot."

Survived by his daughter, Sydney Crowder Franco, and son-in-law, Jonathan B. Franco; beloved grandchildren, Chase and Annabelle Franco; sister, Brenda J. Crowder; nephew, William Conley Crowder, Sr., and niece-in-law, Mary Patrick Crowder; great nephew, William Conley Crowder, Jr.; many other relatives and cherished friends.

A celebration of Russ' life will be held on May 16, 2026, with further details to be provided by the family. Interment Summit Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Chase Haverstock Crowder Memorial Foundation or to the donor's choice.
