Ruth Hopperstad Obituary Hopperstad, Ruth A. age 89, went to be with the Lord on December 24, 2014. Preceded in death by her parents Wilber Koplitz and Ruth (Olson) and husband J. Jerome (Jerry) Hopperstad. Ruth was born on July 14, 1925 in Minneapolis. She was a sweet, gracious, loving and generous woman who is deeply loved and missed by her children Dick (Sue) Hopperstad, Barb Hopperstad (Kate Kleiter), Mary Ellen (Forrest) Skeesick, brother Dick (Dorothy) Koplitz, sister Mary Rudquist, brother Ron (Sachiko), grandchildren Angela (Jason) Mekelburg, Karen Hopperstad (Chris Weiss), Curt (Joy) Hopperstad, Julia Skeesick (fianc Ben Thorson), Christina Skeesick, great-grandchildren Ruth Lee, Jerome Hopperstad, Gregory Hopperstad, Sonja Lee, Einar Lee, Arne Lee, Logan Mekelberg, Brian Brenny, Aiyana Brenny and Sam Brenny, many nieces, nephews and friends from every chapter of her life. Ruth graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 where she was active in many student activities, including serving as Chairperson of the Victory Committee helping to sell War Bonds to support the war effort. She graduated with an Education degree from the University of Minnesota in 1947. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority while on campus and maintained friendships with her sorority sisters for the rest of her life. She married Jerry Hopperstad on August 28th, 1949 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before his death in 1999. She taught eighth grade American history in the St. Louis Park school system before leaving to start her family. She told her children that she had two goals in life: to marry and raise a family and to run for public office. She served on the Hopkins School Board from 1972-1977. She was particularly proud of her role in the hiring of Dr. Art Bruning as the Superintendent. When she retired, one of her colleagues called her "the conscience of the school board". She and her husband joined Wayzata Country Club in 1964 and Ruth remained a member for the rest of her life. A member of the ladies 9-hole golf league, she enjoyed playing golf until the age of 83. The family is grateful for the care she received in her home through @Home Solutions and at Folkestone Commons Assisted Living and the Folkestone Gables Care Center. Visitation at the David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 Wayzata Boulevard East, Wayzata, MN from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 2nd, 2015. A funeral service will be held at the Folkestone Chapel, 100 Promenade Avenue, Wayzata, MN on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. A gathering at Wayzata Country Club, 200 Wayzata Boulevard West will immediately follow the service. Private interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Presbyterian Homes and Services Foundation, Community Partnership with Youth and Families and Sherburn Assembly of God-Regional Worship Center.
