Obituary

Sally Pillsbury Obituary Sally Lucille Whitney Pillsbury, 93, died peacefully on February 4, 2018, at Folkestone in Wayzata, Minnesota, on Lake Minnetonka, whose shores she had lived on for over 60 years. The daughter of Wheelock Whitney and Katherine Kimball Whitney, Sally grew up in her family home in St. Cloud. She attended The Madeira School and Smith College where she was active in politics, sports and the dramatic arts. As a teenager she spent a summer during World War II, as a lifeguard at a pool in Wayzata where she encountered her future father-in-law. He told her to wait for the boys to come home. She did and married a Marine, his son George Sturgis Pillsbury (1921-2011). They had a long and treasured marriage for 65 years. Sally went on to have a career as volunteer and leader in politics and community activities. Among her fondest memories were her time as Dwight Eisenhowers scheduler in his Chicago campaign office; her giving the nominating speech at the 1964 Republican Convention for Minnesota favorite son Walter Judd; and the opportunity to work with women candidates from both parties. She was a founding director and served for decades on the board of the Guthrie Theater. She contributed her leadership and fundraising skills as Chair of the University Hospital Board of Governors, Women Winning, the Betty Ford Foundation, and Smith events and class reunion drives her alma mater. She and George could always be counted on to appear at political or nonprofit events for the many organizations and causes they supported over the years. She loved her family, especially her ten grandchildren. Every summer was "Camp Granny" at her home on Lake Minnetonka. No graduation was missed. Sally and her brothers were stand-out singers and repositories of the lyrics of all the standards and more than a bit of vaudeville. She could break out in song at the smallest prompt, including a moving performance of "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" for that towns mayor and assembled guests. A bench in her and Georges name at the Minnesota State Fair serves as a symbol of her love of Minnesota, politicking and people greeting. Sally was preceded in death by her husband and brothers Wheelock Whitney, Jr. and J. Kimball Whitney; and is survived by children Charles A. Pillsbury, George S. Pillsbury, Jr., Sarah K. Pillsbury, and Katharine W. Pillsbury, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her memorial service will be held at the Wayzata Community Church, 125 East Wayzata Boulevard, Wayzata at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to the Guthrie Theatre or Women Winning of Minnesota  Born: October 17, 1924 Death: February 4, 2018 Share your thoughts and memories in the guestbook.
