Susan Maki Obituary Maki, Susan Kay passed away in Bloomington after a long illness on Dec. 7th. She was born to Sophie and Edward Maki in Virginia, Minnesota on November 29th, 1947. Sue's life was a testament to perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness and equality and her reliance on her Christian faith. Sue's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Virginia, Minnesota, where she excelled academically and developed a love for learning. After graduating from high school in 1966, she pursued higher education at Mesabi Community College, earning her associate degree in 1968. She then continued her studies at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English, a reflection of her intellectual curiosity and disciplined work ethic. After entering the workforce, Sue's ambitions led her to the field of law. In 1979, she graduated from the William Mitchell School of Law, earning her Juris Doctor degree. Her passion for criminal law was evident, and she embarked on a career as a Public Defender for the State of Minnesota, specializing in appellate law. In her retirement years, Sue pursed volunteer work, especially at her church. She helped in various capacities, including service on the mental health task force. Beyond her professional achievements, Sue was cherished for her kindness, sharp wit, and unwavering moral compass. She loved her family and life-long friends. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Shirley Georgi (Donald) and her nephew Tim (Brenda.) A funeral service is Mt. Olivet West on Friday, January 17th. The visitation is at 11, the funeral at 12 and lunch at 1 pm, Victoria, MN. Graveside rites will be held in Virginia later in the spring. The David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata is in charge of arrangements.
