William Frederick Hartfiel Jr.

Age 96 of Wayzata, Bill died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 11, 2026. Son of Dr. William F. and Marie Hartfiel, Bill was born on June 4, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Bill attended St. Paul Academy before graduating from Yale University, where he was a member of the Varsity Golf Team.

In 1954, Bill married Helen Janney Case. Together they shared 71 remarkable years and raised five children. He thrived in his role as a father and grandfather. He was an active and devoted presence in his children's and grandchildren's lives- cheering them on in their many activities with wise counsel and unwavering love.

Bill's entrepreneurial spirit led him to found the Hartfiel Company (now Hartfiel Automation) in 1958. He successfully led the company as CEO and President until his retirement in 2000, growing the business into a highly regarded industry leader.

Beyond his professional life, Bill was committed to giving back to his community. He dedicated his time and expertise by serving on the boards of Blake School, Wayzata Community Church, Bennett Family Park, Washburn Center for Children, and United Theological Seminary. His vision was perhaps most visible at Bennett Family Park in Minnetonka. Through his tireless leadership and fundraising, Bill transformed the park into a premier recreational facility, creating a hub that continues to benefit thousands of young athletes.

Bill was also instrumental in bringing Omega Effective Living Personal Development Seminars to Minnesota which were held throughout the state for more than twenty years.

Bill will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He took a keen interest in the lives of others. He mentored and guided many people with his wisdom and inspiration. His legendary hand-written notes, filled with supportive words, are cherished by those he encouraged over the years.

Preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen Comfort. Bill is survived by his wife Helen and their five children: Jim (Martha), Ned, Bob (Marnie), Mary Jackley (Jay). and Rick (Kate) Hartfiel. He has seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
