Obituary

Winston Lindberg Obituary Lindberg, Winston R. age 84, of Wayzata, passed away February 4, 2007 in Naples, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Larey Evans Lindberg and survived by his daughter, Larey Lindberg Swanson, her husband Craig swanson, three grandchildren, Serena, Savannah, and Craig, Jr.; sister-in-law, Carrie Wahlstrom; niece, Leah Moyneur, her husband Patrick Moyneur, and their children Laura and Lisa. He was born March 11, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to parents Alice Wahlstrom and Arvid C. Lindberg, M.D. He graduated from North High School in 1940 and went on to receive a B.S. at the University of Minnesota. He graduated from The University of Minnesota Medical School in 1946. He completed his internship at the Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital in 1947, attended the Westbrook Ophthalmological Study Council in 1949 and completed his Ophthalmology residency at the John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, TN. He served as a ship doctor in the Navy during WWII. Winston began his career in private practice with his father A.C., also an Ophthalmologist, in Minneapolis. He was an attending physician at Swedish Hospital and St. Barnabas Hospital. Later, when the hospitals merged, he served as Chief of Staff at Metropolitan Medical Center. He worked at Phillips Eye Institute before retiring in 1990. He also served as an adjunct professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. His career, and especially his relationships with his patients, brought him great satisfaction in life. Dr. Lindberg was an active member of the community and served in many volunteer positions. He was a charter member of the Minneapolis Ophthalmological Society in 1953, and served as president of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He served on the board of directors for the University of Minnesota Vision Foundation from 1994-2000. Like his father, he was a member of the Minnesota Medical Association Fifty Club for serving at least fifty years in his medical career. Winston was also very proud of his Swedish heritage. He was an active volunteer at the American Swedish Institute for many years, and served on the Board of Trustees from 1978-1984 (as president of the board from 1982-1984). He has been a member of Svenska Sallskapet since 1979. In addition, he served as Director of the Augustana Care Corporation and Augustana Chapel View Homes, Inc. For his initiative and achievement in promoting Swedish-American friendship and trade, he was awarded a certificate of appreciation. Winston was, in some ways, a renaissance man. He loved learning and read prolifically his entire life. He also loved travel, the arts (especially organ music), history, photography, astronomy, and sports. He especially loved animals. Despite his many accomplishments, his most cherished role was that of father to his only child and grandfather to the three grandchildren he adored. We love him and will miss him dearly. Thank you dad. His funeral service will be held at St. Martin's by-the-Lake Episcopal Church in Minnetonka Beach, Friday February 9, at 3:00 p.m. An open house will follow at the Lafayette Club. Private interment, Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Rush Point, MN. Memorials preferred to the Department of Ophthalmology, Research Laboratory, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN 56082 or to the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis, MN 55407.
