Dr. John Henry Boyd

Dr. John Henry Boyd, Emeritus Finance Professor at the University of Minnesota, Carlson Business School, died October 7, 2023 at 79 years of age. John left an indelible mark over the course of his 20-year career at the Carlson School. After joining the school in 1996, he went on to serve as the Finance Department chair and held the titles of Kappel Chair in Business and Government and the Banking Industry of Minnesota Chair at the time of his retirement in 2016.

Prior to the Carlson School, he served as the senior research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, where he earned the esteemed President’s Award, and was an associate professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He attended the London School of Economics and earned his PhD in applied economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

His primary research interests in banking, financial intermediation, intermediation and development, and the economics of gun ownership kept him in high demand. He acted as a consultant to the United States Treasury, White House Council of Economic Advisers, Federal Home Loan Banks, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Federal Reserve System, various banking and trade associations, and testified before the United States Congress.

A prolific researcher, his work appeared in leading finance and economics journals and academic works, including American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Palgrave's Dictionary, and more. He also held editorial positions at several journals.

Dr. Boyd, born in Oregon, called Minnesota home for over 45 years where he enjoyed the outdoors hunting, fishing, boating; and caring for his beloved pets.  John loved his sons, family, and friends.  Those that he loved, he loved dearly.  He was preceded in death by his brother George Dunnigan and parents John Hargrove Boyd and Louise Davis Boyd.  He is survived by his sons Brendan Davis Boyd and Christian Joseph Boyd, his daughter’s in-law Maggie and Margarita, and his grandchildren Peter, Margaret, Lainey and Nicholas.

John’s family and friends will remember him for his sharp wit and intellect, his passion for his work and his love of nature.  He will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 Wayzata Blvd East, in Wayzata on Saturday October 21st from 1-3 PM.
