Age 86, of Wayzata, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018. Preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Anne Franey Schumacher, and his brother, the Honorable Robert H. Schumacher. Survived by his wife, Kathleen; his sister, Irene (Charles) McConville; his children, Terrie (Robert) Ellsworth, Leslie (Jeffrey) Stuart, Barbara Schumacher, Duane Douglas, Susan (Michael) Rands, James (Sarah Nordby) Schumacher Jr., Nikolaus (Leah) Schumacher; grandchildren, Frances (Todd) Howe, Robert (Margaret) Ellsworth, Molly Armstrong, Kenneth (Tina) Stuart, Rebekah Schumacher, Timothy Stuart, Emelia Stuart, Alora Rands, Joshua Rands, Andrew Stuart, Anne Stuart, Thomas Stuart, Matthew Rands, Samantha Rands, and Roman John Schumacher; and great-grandchildren, Miles, Matthew, and Michael Armstrong, Isabella and Robert Ellsworth, Jackson Howe, and Elizabeth Anne Stuart.
James graduated from Cretin High School in 1949, the College of St. Thomas in 1953, and St. Paul College of Law (William Mitchell Law School) in 1957. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve at age 17 and retired as a Naval Reserve JAG Corps Captain in 1991. He practiced law for several years with Feinberg, Meyers, Mirviss, and Schumacher. He served as Chairman of the Board on Judicial Standards from 1982-86.

Visitation Thursday, September 20, from 5-7 at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 East Wayzata Blvd, Wayzata. Funeral Service Friday, September 21, 11am at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church,17205 County Road 6 in Plymouth with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Interment in Waverly, MN, following reception at church.
