John Patterson Mangum

1993 - 2021

John Patterson Mangum

Born June 23, 1993. John lost his battle with Batten's disease on April 3, 2021.
He is survived by his parents, Mike and Judy; sisters, Angela (Matt), Katie (Sam); brother, Matt (Sarah); grandmother Janis Favorite, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.  John was a graduate of Hopkins High School.   He was a Special Olympics champion and enjoyed his swim club, music, movies, playing his harmonica, and pontoon rides at the cabin.  John had the biggest heart and taught us all about kindness, strength, and love.  He made us understand what is truly important in life.  His smile, laughter, and all around good spirit made him an amazing young man.  John made many friends throughout his life and will be missed and remembered by all that knew him.
Special thanks to Dr. Steven Janousek, Dr. John Haugen, Dr. Spencer Bershow, Dr. James White and Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Hospice staff, Melissa, Jenna, Mary, and Dr. Tonya VanHee.  Memorials to BDSRA Juvenile Batten's research.  A celebration of life planned at a future date.

Judy, Mike and Family,
What an inspiring description of John's life and accomplishments in the face of such a terrible disease.  May his memory prompt all of us to learn to be more kind, strong, and loving.  And for researchers to find a cure for Juvenile Batten's disease.  Our hearts are with you.

I worked with John during his time at Transition Plus and especially remember a field trio to a nature preserve. We walked slowly on a pathway on a beautiful sunny day while I described everything around us.  His smile and delight in living the moment in nature made a profound memory for me.  I had occasion to say hi to him when my son rode the same van to Zenith Day Program.  A kind and gentle soul.  He added to the world.
