Lawrence Charles Welliver
Larry Welliver, aged 75 years, died peacefully on April 19, surrounded by family, in the home he built 41 years ago.
He was born in Richfield, Minnesota, to Charles and Laura Welliver. He met the love of his life, Kathy, while he was an engineering grad student at the University of Minnesota.
Larry had a distinguished 35-year career at Honeywell and proudly holds a patent from 1975.
Larry had many talents. He enjoyed woodworking, and his craftsmanship resulted in the handmade cabinetry throughout the home he and Kathy built together, as well as many toys for his grandchildren.
His love of photography earned him the nickname “Flash,” and every holiday meal
began with a family photo (and a race to get into position before the timer went off).
He was a remarkably accomplished gardener who carefully tended acres of roses, peonies, and a stunning shade garden of hundreds of hosta varieties. Larry’s extensive gardens are putting on a show of blooms that he’ll be remembered by.
In his retirement, Larry devoted his attention to leading Bible studies and mission trips at his church. He also served as the first board president for Imara International in Nanyuki, Kenya, a home for pregnant teens and their children. His leadership helped build the organizational foundation that is providing life-changing impact to the teens and children it serves. He was a deeply committed person of faith who wanted others to experience the presence and love of Jesus Christ.
Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, as well as a mentor and
spiritual father to many. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathy; three children:
David Welliver, (Amanda), Elizabeth Ekstrand, and Stephanie Poppler (Dan); sister,
Peggy Mahan, of San Antonio, TX, and four grandchildren: Henry Welliver, Caroline
Welliver, Casey Poppler, and Addison Poppler. He was preceded in death by his
parents.
A private celebration of life service to honor Larry will be on Friday, May 7. Please join us online live for the service at www.MessiahChurch.org/live.
