Newquist, Lydene "Denie" Denie Newquist, Age 80, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on August 6, 2021. Denie grew up in Uptown, Minneapolis and attended South High School. She went on to earn both B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. During her college years she was a member of AOII sorority and the U of M Pom Squad. She lived an active and full life as a resident of Plymouth for 41 years. She spent a career in elementary education as a teacher, manager, and lobbyist, mostly with Wayzata Schools. Among some of her most proud career accomplishments were helping create Wayzata's first before and after school childcare programs for working parents, as well as the annual Interfaith Outreach (IOCP) Sleepout Program for school children to raise awareness and funds for homelessness. She was an avid community member and volunteer for Waytonka Club, IOCP, PTA, Daughters of the American Revolution, Society of Mayflower Descendants, Wayzata Community Church and Cub Scouts. However, the volunteer program closest to her heart was the mentoring she did at Cancermount, after she beat the odds of a 5% survival rate cancer diagnosis at age 42. She says she was inspired by a fierce determination to survive so she could 'be around to raise her boys'. Some of her favorite things were spending time at Ottertail Lake, card nights with friends, hosting family gatherings for holidays and spending time with her family. Denie was an exceptional mother, friend and community leader. According to granddaughter Ingrid, she was sassy. Denie's motto for when things turned out worse than expected was, "Well, we're building memories." Denie's love of having fun quickly spread to those around her. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, infectious laugh and strong spirit. She will be missed dearly by the very many people's lives she touched. Survived by husband of 56 years, Harv Newquist, children Rick (Anne) Newquist, Rob (Natalee) Newquist, grandchildren Ingrid Newquist, Ben Schwab & Everett Newquist. Thank you for the tender and loving care at Minneapolis Veteran's Home. Memorial service in spring or summer 2022.
