Richard Harold Swanson

Richard "Dick" Swanson, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Independence, MN on January 26th. Dick was born on January 2, 1932 to Charles & Tabitha Swanson in Duluth, MN. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1950 & enlisted in the US Air Force, serving in the Korean War. Following his service, Dick went on to pursue a business degree from the University of Minnesota. He worked for General Mills for 32 years, retiring in 1994. Dick had a lifelong passion for the Boundary Waters & the Gunflint Trail, taking numerous canoe trips with his children & friends. He was able to enjoy his retirement years on Devil Track Lake, 10 miles up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais, MN.  Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie & Bessie Swanson; his siblings, Robert Swanson, Doris Lee, Donald Swanson, Thomas Swanson & Lorraine Martin; and his son, Cory Swanson. He is survived by spouse Sheila Swanson; children Tim (Sandy) Swanson, Kim Harris, Greg (Chris) Swanson; grandchildren Michelle Harris, Keaton Kronberg, Erin Swanson, Tyra Swanson, Amanda Swanson, Annika Swanson, Ben Swanson, Anna Swanson & Josh Swanson.  A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 4th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Choo Choo Restaurant & Bar, 160 Railroad Street W, Loretto, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to MN DNR.
