Suzy Robertson Obituary

In loving memory of Suzy (Schmidt) Robertson, of Minnetonka, who passed away on February 23rd, 2024.  Suzy, aged 64, was a beacon of love, creativity, and compassion, deeply cherished by her family and friends.

Born and raised in Batavia, IL, Suzy’s journey took her across the world, where she forged lasting connections and left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.  She met her beloved husband, David, while attending college at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, and together they embarked on a beautiful life journey.  Suzy's passion for literature led her to pursue a graduate degree in children’s literature at Simmons College in Boston, MA, where she cultivated her love for storytelling and creative writing.   Throughout her career, Suzy's dedication to children's literature shone brightly.

She contributed original writing and in many other ways supported the creation of From Sea to Shining Sea, a collection of American folklore, and she co-authored a picture book biography of Abraham Lincoln.  Both books garnered many awards.  She wrote book reviews and shared her passion for books and reading in fifth-grade classrooms.  Exemplifying this combination of both professionalism and deep commitment to nurturing a love for reading in others, especially young people, was her work at The Horn Book Magazine in Boston and in various children’s bookstores in Seattle, WA, and Pasadena, CA.

Suzy's creative talents extended beyond the written word; she was an accomplished weaver, infusing her creations with love and warmth to give to others.  Her music (piano and alto sax) and artistry (drawings and paintings) brought joy to those around her, and her poetic perspective on life enriched the lives of her close friends.

Suzy was an active member of her church (including choir) and the broader community, volunteering her time and talents to various organizations.  Her involvement with Bloom Early Learning, a non-profit childcare center dedicated to supporting low-income families, reflected her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Despite facing health challenges, including two battles with childhood cancer, Suzy approached life with resilience and gratitude, cherishing every moment with her family and friends.  Her adventurous spirit led her to embrace the experience of living in Singapore for six years, where she immersed herself in the diverse cultures of Asia.

Suzy leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.   She is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Heidi Koski (Nate); son, Kevin; Heidi and Nate’s son, Malcolm, Suzy’s grandson; and brother Andrew Schmidt (Debbie). She is also survived by her mother, Jaimie.

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother, whose love knew no bounds. Suzy will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her kindness, creativity, and the love she provided to all who knew her.
